American expressions…

…I will never understand:

1. Touch and go: To mean uncertainty. A naval expression, apparently.

Eg. Suzy’s condition is touch and go. The doctors say it could go either way.

2. Flatware: Dinnerware, forks, spoons and serving implements. ‘Flat’ because they lie flat. We call them cutlery or utensils.

I think a lot of it has to do with location as well, after all, the US is pretty big. We use “silverware” or “utensils” here - never heard of flatware or tough and go.

Well, this expression (Malaysia version) takes a whole new meaning. Touch and Go has a different meaning in Malaysia. :)
